Obituary of Robert Ellwood Gibbs

Robert Ellwood Gibbs Robert Ellwood Gibbs, 92, of Erie, PA., passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024. He was born in Northeast, PA. on January 10, 1932. He was the son of the late Eleanor Rachel Shirey Gibbs and Lewis Ellwood “Pete” Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jane Gibbs, his sisters; Joan Patricia Gibbs Herring, Jean Carol Gibbs, his brother Thomas Lee Gibbs, his son Roger Edward Gibbs, and his grandson Matthew Lee Gibbs. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1950 and entered the Air Force. He was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi, for a year of radar school, then stationed 3 yrs. In Duluth, MN., where he met his wife. After his discharge, in 1954, he went on to Pennsylvania State University Main Campus on the G.I. Bill. He graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Philadelphia Battery Company in Philadelphia, PA. where he started his family. He then moved to Erie, PA., where he worked for Erie Resistor Corporation, later Erie Technological Products, all in the Electrical Engineering disciplines. He retired after 15 years from Lord Corporation as a Quality Control Manager. He was a resident of Millcreek Twp., for over sixty years. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and boating. He was active in MYAA baseball as a coach and President of MYAA football for several years. He coached basketball at St Paul’s Lutheran Church. He loved Presque Isle and especially fishing. Everyone agrees he was a great fisherman. This was a meaningful time bonding with family, his fishing friends, and especially his sons. He volunteered for the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie Fishing Club and enjoyed participating in any event teaching young children to fish. He loved the annual ice fishing clinics, first day of trout, and any event to get to the lake. He was enthusiastic about a necessary daily visit to see what was happening at Walnut Creek, right up until his death, enjoying the beauty of nature. He is survived by his children: Debra Rastetter, Judith Conley, Ronald (Debra) Gibbs, Robert (Karen) Gibbs, grandchildren; Jason (Jennifer) Gibbs, Adrienne Conley, Jamie (Jeremy) Ault, Brian (Krystal) Gibbs, Johnathan (Katie) Gibbs, and great grandchildren; Annika Gibbs, Stella Gibbs, Ethan Gibbs, Emma Gibbs, Ada Ault, and Madeline Ault. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. Erie, PA. on Wednesday May 1, 2024, from 3:00 pm -7:00 pm. Family service Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Erie County Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3968 Hershey Rd.
